Who is Kamina Kawena

A mobile NPC that works in the GBV space Empowering & Upskilling of victims & survivors of GBV. The women in the shelters are taught to make blankets in a sustainable model. No electricity is required for the making of these blankets. The women are paid for every blanket produced – hence creating an income stream. The blankets are then sold to identified outlets, corporates and individuals

Kamina Kawena envisages a South Africa where GBV survivors rebuild their lives with dignity, economic independence, and community support.

Gender based violence statistics in South Africa

  1. 51% of women in SA say they’ve experienced GBV, 76% of men saying they’ve perpetrated GBV at one stage in their lives (2010 Gauteng sample)

  2. In the year ending March 2024, 5,578 women and 1,656 children were murdered—South Africa remains among the highest in femicide globally in Q1 2025 (Jan–Mar).

  3. Police recorded 10,688 rape cases, a slight year-on-year increase of 36; domestic violence prosecutions were notably high in provinces such as Gauteng, KZN, and the Western Cape

  4. According to SAMRC and HSRC survey data: over 33% of South African women aged 16+ report lifetime physical violence and nearly 10% have experienced sexual violence.
